Maximizing the Benefits of Electric Forklifts

Jun 15, 2024

1. Sustainable Choice
Like all electric forklifts, our forklifts do not emit harmful exhaust fumes, particulate matter or CO2. Their low energy consumption is another environmental advantage. High durability (fewer wear parts) also reduces the impact on the planet. This is because less material and energy are consumed to manufacture replacement parts.

2. Reduced Energy Bills
Our 4.0 to 5.5 ton 80V electric vehicles are best in class in terms of energy efficiency. They run longer per charge than less efficient competitors. And, they cost less to recharge than it does to refuel an internal combustion engine forklift. Selecting ECO mode reduces energy consumption further. For maximum efficiency, you can choose lithium-ion (Li-ion) batteries.

3. Less Maintenance
A typical advantage of electric forklifts is their simple plug-in diagnostics and troubleshooting. This means faults can be discovered sooner and easily fixed before serious damage occurs. With our latest onboard multi-function display units, drivers and technicians can always be informed of the condition and needs of the truck.

Quick and easy access to maintenance and repairs helps to further reduce maintenance time and costs. Battery-related maintenance is something electric forklift users must consider. With lithium-ion batteries, maintenance is minimal. Lithium-ion technology also allows for fast charging, so you can keep your forklift running without having to change the battery. You can simply plug it into the nearest charger during breaks. Changing gas cylinders requires more time and effort. The same goes for driving to the gas station to fill up diesel.

For lead-acid batteries, our 4.0 to 5.5 ton trucks offer time-saving options, including: inspection hatches for quick inspection and watering; quick-connect access points for onboard charging; and equipment for quick side-to-side swaps. Importantly, electric forklifts have fewer moving parts to maintain and replace regularly. And when it comes to battery replacement, lithium-ion batteries last longer.

4. Lasting Value
With simpler maintenance and fewer wear parts, electric forklifts tend to have higher residual values. Increasing demand from buyers for used electric forklifts should increase this level. The rugged construction and superior quality of Cat forklifts is another attractive factor in the used market. To uphold our brand reputation, we pay special attention to sealing and protecting key components in this electric range.

5. Power and Speed
The Cat electric forklifts we highlight here can certainly challenge internal combustion trucks in terms of power and speed. Our latest motors have a high rpm range for more precise acceleration control and produce higher torque at low speeds. Even better, their performance can be intelligently adjusted to meet your needs. Our PowerBurst feature is a great example. It's for when you need an extra burst of torque. You may need it to maintain speed on a slope, or to accelerate hard. You may also be carrying a heavy load at the same time. In those moments, PowerBurst automatically kicks in to increase your performance.

6. Intelligent Drive Control
Advanced electronics and intelligent controls enable electric forklift designers to create a better user experience. The results include greater driver satisfaction, performance, and output. Our EP40-55(C)N(H) series has many intelligent drive features. For example, its Responsive Drive System (RDS) constantly adjusts the performance characteristics of the truck. It does this by monitoring and immediately responding to changes in the speed of the driver's pedal operation. Drivers say the truck seems to know how they want it to behave at any time. RDS also makes all movements, starts and stops smooth. Intelligent Curve Control automatically and smoothly adjusts the truck's turning speed and minimizes lateral forces. This prevents unsafe turns and maintains stability. From a productivity perspective, this means your drivers can confidently turn at the maximum safe speed for the turning angle. Adaptive Steering is another way to automatically assist comfort, control and stability. It adjusts and optimizes the steering ratio and steering effort based on the truck's driving speed.

7. Intelligent Load Handling

Our RDS also responds to the forklift driver's hydraulic control operation speed to optimize mast behavior. In addition, these forklifts are equipped with our load-sensing SmoothFlow hydraulic system. It automatically adjusts to accommodate different load weights, keeping all mast and forklift movements smooth, precise and consistent. The same consistency is maintained even when two or more hydraulic functions are used simultaneously. At the same time, automatic hydraulic control adjustment helps keep mast and chassis movements stable when lifting more than 2.5 meters or so. Above this height, it limits hydraulic and driving speeds. Passive Sway Control absorbs mast tilting forces during higher lifts and transmits them to the chassis.

8. Programmable Performance
Electric forklift technology offers a wide range of scope for programming performance features. This enables you to adapt the truck to the needs of individual drivers and tasks. One option we offer is a simple switch between preset ECO and PRO modes. Alternatively, we can apply fully customized settings for parameters including lifting, lowering and travel speed.

9. Automated safety
Precise control is essential for safety when driving a forklift and handling goods. Again, electric technology brings additional features. Sections 6, 7 and 8 show how we have maximized the precision and control of the electric forklifts presented here. Another auxiliary function is our electronic differential lock, which maximizes grip on slippery surfaces. Other standard features include hill hold and automatic parking brake. For added safety, we have installed a presence detection system (PDS). This disables all hydraulic and drive functions if the driver is not properly seated. Intelligent reversing alarm is one of the optional extras.

10. Ultimate agility
Electric forklifts benefit from a very precise and sensitive steering system, which makes maneuvering smooth and agile. Our 4.0 to 5.5 tonne range features OmniTurn all-wheel steering, which takes this advantage to another level. It provides better grip, smoother turns, and unmatched agility. The rear axle can rotate over 100 degrees, allowing instant sideways turns without initial rearward movement. Drivers say they feel like they are driving a much smaller truck.

11. Improve Driver Productivity
Forklift noise and vibration can make drivers tired, nervous, and uncomfortable. This affects morale and productivity. When people switch to electric forklifts, one difference they immediately notice is the quietness, smoothness, and low vibration levels of electric forklifts. Our 4.0 to 5.5 ton models build on this advantage with market-leading SilentRun+ hydraulic pumps. Quiet drives and other low-noise technologies increase comfort.

12. Increase Profits
To increase profits, you need to cut costs, increase production, or both. The 11 key benefits listed above will help you achieve these goals. Going electric will save you money over time, reducing your TCO (total cost of ownership). As we've described, you'll spend less on powering, maintaining, and repairing your forklifts. Downtime will also be reduced. Your truck will have a long service life and retain its good resale value. Its superior maneuverability, control and precision will increase your productivity. These factors, along with automatic safety aids, will reduce the risk of costly accidents and lost working time. Last but not least, its ergonomics and comfort will help minimize sick leave and motivate your drivers.
